They were able to earn money by taking on extra jobs at nights and on weekends. They could save enough money to purchase their freedom but this was a long and difficult process.

What were the working conditions of the Southern plantations?
The conditions were harsh and they worked long hours sometimes all night by candle or moon light. Sometimes owners would sell family members and break up families.
How were enslaved Africans able to keep their traditions alive on plantations?
They would keep the African culture alive by making drums, banjos, and other instruments similar to the ones they had in Africa. But some Southern Colonies banned the use of these instruments because they were afraid the enslaved people were using them to send secret messages to each other.
What were some ways enslaved people resisted slavery?
Tried to trick owners and overseers by working slowly, breaking tools, or pretending to be sick. Many attempted to escape.
