6. Human postnatal craniofacial development Flashcards
(12 cards)
6. Human postnatal craniofacial development
Four main types of growth patterns recognized, and which two are most relevant to craniofacial growth
- Neural, somatic, genital, and lymphoid
- The two most relevant to craniofacial growth are neural and somatic growth
6. Human postnatal craniofacial development
Characteristics of neural growth and its relevance to craniofacial development
- Determined by growth of brain, w/ calvarium and orbit following this pattern
- Rapid growth in early years of life-> slows down until around age 7 when growth almost complete
- Influences development of skull and facial structures
6. Human postnatal craniofacial development
Somatic growth, and how it relates to body height
- Pattern followed by most structures=>
- Observed in long bones
- Increase in body height
- Rapid in early years but slows down in prepubertal period
- Pubertal growth spurt, occurring around age 12 for girls and age 14 for boys=>
- Rapid growth followed by further slower growth
6. Human postnatal craniofacial development
Growth pattern of the maxilla and mandible in relation to neural and somatic growth
- Maxilla and mandible follow growth pattern that is intermediate between neural and somatic growth
- Mandible more somatic growth curve
- Maxilla exhibits more neural growth
6. Human postnatal craniofacial development
Development of the calvarium and its growth process
- Part of skull that develops intramembranously to surround brain
- Follows neural growth pattern
- It comprises frontal bones, parietal bones, and squamous parts of temporal and occipital bones
6. Human postnatal craniofacial development
How the cranial base develops, and the percentage of its growth that is completed by the age of 3 years
- Endochondral ossification=>
- Somatic and neural growth patterns
- 50% of its growth completed by age of 3 years
6. Human postnatal craniofacial development
Maxilla develops embryologically from
The 1st pharyngeal arch
6. Human postnatal craniofacial development
Ossification of the maxillary complex
- Intramembranous
- Beginning in 6th week in utero
6. Human postnatal craniofacial development
Growth pattern of the maxillary complex during postnatal development
Intermediate between a neural and a somatic growth pattern
6. Human postnatal craniofacial development
mandible develops embryologically from the
1st pharyngeal arch
6. Human postnatal craniofacial development
Mandible ossification
- Intramembraneous ossification
- Beginning at 6th week in utero
6. Human postnatal craniofacial development
Postnatal growth of the mandible
- Intermediate pattern between neural and somatic growth=>
- More emphasis on somatic growth
- Most mandibular growth occurs as a result of periosteal activity
