Algebra Ch. 1 Flashcards
(39 cards)
What are natural numbers?
a set of numbers that are used to count objects. Also known as “counting numbers”.
What are whole numbers?
a set of numbers containing the natural numbers AND zero.
What are integers?
a set of numbers containing the natural numbers, zero, and negative numbers.
What are rational numbers?
numbers that can be expressed in the form a/b where “a” and “b” are integers and “b” does not equal 0.
What are real numbers?
all irrational and rational numbers.
What is a finite set?
a set whose elements can be counted. Ex. {0,1,2,3,5,11}
What is an infinite set?
a set whose elements cannot be counted because there is no end to the set. Ex. {6,7,4,0…}
What is an empty set?
a set that contains no elements. Written as { }
What are opposites?
a number that is the same distance away from zero but on the other side of zero. (Either positive or negative. Both numbers cannot be negative or positive.)
What is a subset?
a set in which all its elements are contained in another set of equal or greater size.
Ex. A={1,2,3,4,5,6,7} B={3,6,7} B is a subset of A.
What is a number line?
a line that is used to show the numbers of a set in their relationship to each other.
What is a graph?
a point on the number line that represents each number.
What is a standard number line?
a number line that has positive numbers appearing to the right of zero, and negative numbers appearing to the left of zero.
What is a unit measure?
the distance between points on a number line.
What is absolute value?
the distance a number is away from zero on the number line. (distance is always positive.) Ex. l5l=5, l-3l=3
What is inequality?
a comparison between two numbers that are not equal.
What is an irrational number?
an infinite, non-repeating decimal.
What is to square?
to multiply a number by itself.
What is a square root?
the opposite of squaring a number.
What is the radical sign?
the symbol means to take the square root of the number underneath the sign.
What is rational approximation?
a rational number that is close to but not equal to the value of an irrational number.
What is a real number line?
all the points on a number line represented by all the irrational and rational numbers
What is the completeness property of real numbers?
every point on the real number line corresponds to a real number, and every real number corresponds to a point on the real number line.
What is GPE?
the amount of inaccuracy in a measurement that is figured out by multiplying 1/2 times the value of the last significant digit.
