Compound Sentences
A compound sentence is made up of TWO independent clauses (a.k.a two simple sentences) joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction. (and yet but nor so for or)
Simple Sentence
A simple sentence is made up of just ONE independent clause.
E.g. “I at some ice cream.”
Complex Sentences
A complex sentence is made up of one independent clause and one dependent clause.
E.g. “I ate some ice cream while reading a book
OR “While reading a book, I ate some ice cream.”
NOTE: WHEN YOU START A SENTENCE WITH A DEPENDENT CLAUSE YOU HAVE TO PUT A COMMA AFTER IT.
