BIO: Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous, & Integumentary Flashcards
(31 cards)
What are the basic types of tissues?
Epithelial, connective, nervous, and muscular
What are the levels of organization in living things?
Cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
List the human body systems and function
Muscular- muscles
Nervous- nerves
Skeletal- bones
Integumentary- skin
What is the function of all organ systems working together?
To maintain homeostasis
What is a neuron?
A cell that transmits electrical impulses.
Draw and label a neuron…
Axon terminal, nodes, myelin sheaths, axon, cell body, nucleus, dendrites.
What is a threshold of a neuron?
The minimal level of a stimulus that a required to activate a neuron.
What is resting potential?
Electrical charge across a cell membrane of a resting neuron.
What is action potential?
Reversal of charges across the cell membrane of a neuron; a nerve impulse.
What is sent across the synapse of a neuron to another cell? Define the answer.
Neurotransmitter- chemicals used b a neuron to transmit an impulse across a synapse to another cell.
What makes up the central nervous system?
The brain and spinal cord
What makes up the peripheral nervous system?
The peripheral nervous system consists of all the nerves and associated cells that are not apart of the brain and spinal cord.
What is the difference between the somatic and autonomic divisions of the nervous system?
Somatic nervous system regulates activities that are under conscious control, such as movement of the skeletal muscles.
What is the autonomic nervous system?
Autonomic nervous system regulates activities that are automatic, or involuntary.
What are the differences between the sensory and motor divisions of the nervous system?
Sensory receives the pulse or information, the motor sends a response back.
What is a rod?
A photoreceptors that is extremely sensitive to light, but does not distinguish color.
What is a cone?
A photoreceptor is less sensitive to light, but does respond to light of different colors.
What sense organs hel with balance and make you feel dizzy?
Hearing includes the semicircular canals which help maintain balance and equilibrium.
What are tendons?
A tough connective tissue that connects bone to muscle
What are ligaments?
A strip of tough connective tissue that holds together bone and bone at a joint.
What are the three different types of muscle?
Smooth, skeletal, and cardiac.
Where is smooth muscle located?
Stomach, blood vessels, and small intestine. Is apart of involuntary movements.
Where is skeletal muscle located?
Located on bones.
Where is cardiac muscle found?
In the heart
