What is the order of plot structure?
Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and then resolution
Plot
The chain of events in a story (in other words, what happens in a story)
Conflict
A struggle between two or more forces in a story
What are the different types of conflict?
Man vs Man
Man vs Nature
Man vs Society
Man vs Self
Setting
The time, place and circumstances of the story
Characterization
The way the author develops the personalities of his/her characters.
What are the types of characters?
Flat, round, static, dynamic, protagonist, and antagonist.
What is a flat character?
Has 1-2 traits. Importance can be summed up in 2 sentences
What is a round character?
Many traits. Feels vibrant and real
What is a static character?
Doesn’t grow or change. Personality remains the same
What is a dynamic character?
Has growth and change
What is a protagonist character?
Main character. Good person/hero. Normally starts the action
What is the antagonist?
The character against the protagonist. Sometimes it is a force not a character
Point of View
The narrative perspective used to tell the story
Who tells the story during 1st person narration?
A character
What is 2nd person narration?
When the reader is treated as a character. Uses “you”.
Who tells the story during 3rd person narration?
The narrator
Theme
The message the author is trying to get across to his or her readers
