Cuts, fractures, joint problems, headaches Flashcards

What they are and how to treat them (31 cards)

1
Q

How cuts heal: cut freshly made (penetrating the epidermis and dermis)

A

Blood vessels contract to stop blood leaking out and bacteria entering the body. Meanwhile clotting substances produce thread- like structures that begin to plug the cut.

16
Q

Strain

A

Pull/tear of tendons or muscles

17
Q

Slipped disc

A

Bulging of a cartilage disc between two vertebrae

18
Q

Dislocation

A

Injury separating the bones of a joint

19
Q

Treatment of dislocation

A

Realignment (sometimes surgery to realign)

20
Q

Rheumatism

A

Any disorder producing pain in joints

21
Q

Rheumatism: osteoarthrosis

A

Disintegrating cartilage with pain and stiffness often in knees/hips, esp. in older people.

22
Q

Treatment for osteoarthrosis

A

Careful exercise and reduced stress on affected joints (severe cases may require surgery)

23
Q

Rheumatism: rheumatoid arthritis

A

Inflamed, swollen, painful joints with eroding bone and cartilage. Bones may fuse, giving stiffened, deformed joints

24
Q

Treatment for rheumatoid arthritis

A

Rest, drugs, and in severe cases surgery

25
What can cause headaches?
Injuries, infections, brain tumours or nervous stress
26
The causes of headaches might affect what in the head?
Pain - sensitive nerve endings in the head
27
Headaches: nasal sinuses
Affected by respiratory infections or allergies
28
Headaches: external sources
Include infected or injured ears, eyes, nose, teeth, or spine; also muscular tension in the neck, scalp, and face and dilation of the temporal artery
29
Migraine
One sided headache connected to the dilation of the temporal artery
30
Headaches: internal sources
Pressure or inflammation affecting veins on the brain's surface, or cerebral arteries, or parts of the dura mater, or pressure or irritation affecting the trigeminal nerve
31
Dura mater
A tough membrane surrounding the brain
