Ear and Eye problems Flashcards
What they are + causes (28 cards)
Symptoms of ear disorders:
Deafness, dizziness, earache tinnitus
Outer ear: blockage
Ear wax or foreign bodies can cause deafness, relieved by a doctor syringing the ear with warm water and/or an agent that dissolves wax
Outer ear: discharge from the ear
Often due to otitis externa or fugus infection
Otitis externa
Infection, inflammation, and maybe earache due often to boils needing medical help
Outer ear: fungus infection
Irritation and discharge requiring antibiotic and antiseptic treatment
Middle ear: perforated eardrum
Caused by injury or infection and producing various problems incl. conduction deafness (helped by a hearing aid)
Middle ear: otitis media
Bacterial infection, maybe with pain and pus perforating the eardrum (treated with antibiotic drugs)
Middle ear: Mastoiditis
Painful inflammation of the mastoid bone, a potentially serious condition that can be treated by antibiotics or surgery
Middle ear: otosclerosis
Bone overgrowth in the oval window, stopping airborne sound vibrations reaching the inner ear (usually treatable by surgery)
Inner ear: Perceptive (sensorineural) deafness
Deafness due to inner ear or nerve damage. Often helped by a carefully chosen hearing aid
Inner ear: Meniére’s disease
Dizziness attacks, deafness, and head noises. Treatments include various drugs
Common eye problems:
Small objects lodged in front of the eye, styes, and conjunctivitis
Eye problems: small objects
Usually removed by blinking, pulling the upper eyelid over the lower eyelid, or using the corner of a handkerchief
Eye problems: stye
An infected, inflamed sebaceous gland around the eyelash, usually treated by removing the eyelash and bathing the eye in hot water
Eye problems: conjunctivitis
Inflammation of the conjunctiva due to infection or irritation . Treatment may involve antibiotics or removing the irritant
Problems with focusing the eye causes:
Short sightedness and long sightedness
Treatment for short/long sightedness
Glasses/contact lenses
Astigmatism
A condition where the eye cannot focus both horizontally and vertically
Myopia
Short sightedness
Hypermetropia
Long sightedness
How short sightedness works:
Light rays from a distant object in front of the retina; a conclave lens corrects this
How long sightedness works:
Light rays from a nearby object focus behind the retina; a convex lens corrects this
Blindness can be:
Total or partial
Blindness can be due to:
A number of causes affecting different parts of the eye
