Respiratory disorders Flashcards
Types and causes (13 cards)
What part of the respiratory system suffer infections and other problems?
Nasal passages and sinuses (air - filled cavities)
Respiratory disorder: common cold
Running and maybe blocked nose, and loss of sense of smell due to a viral infection (usually clearing up after a few days)
Nasal passages: hay fever
Swollen mucus membranes of nose and eyes, with watery discharge and sneezing. Due to allergic reaction, relived by antihistamine drugs
Nasal passages: nose bleeds
Caused by a ruptured blood vessel in the nose, usually stopped by pinching the nostrils
Nasal passages: polyps
Benign tumours partly blocking nasal passages and removed by surgery
Nasal passages: rhinitis
Inflammation of nasal membranes caused by colds or hay fever
Sinuses: sinusitis
Inflammation causing headaches and pain in cheekbones. Drugs help and minor surgery improves the more intractable conditions
Lung and vocal: laryngitis
Inflammation of the larynx (voice box), reducing the voice to a whisper; treated by resting the voice. (Prolonged hoarseness is different and calls for medical attention)
Lung and vocal: tracheitis
Inflammation of the trachea, usually due to a viral infection
Lung and vocal: bronchitis
Inflammation of the bronchi, due to infection and worsened by irritants e.g., cigarette smoke (antibiotics help
Lung and vocal: pneumonia
Features inflamed, fluid - filled areas of lung due to bacterial or viral infection. Antibiotics help cure bacterial pneumonia
Lung and vocal: pleurisy
Inflammation of the pleura (the membrane around the lungs), a sometimes painful condition accompanying lung inflammation
Lung and vocal: tuberculosis (TB)
Affects the lung; Lung damage caused by tuberculosis bacteria. Treated by antibiotics
