Flashcards in Section 1G.a. Greek to English Deck (21):
1

διὰ τί;

why?

2

νῦν

now

3

ΚΥΒ. (suddenly realizing the danger) ἀλλὰ ἆρά ἐστι σῶον τὸ ἡμέτερον πλοῖον, σῶοι δὲ καὶ ἡμεῖς;

CAPTAIN. But is our ship safe, and we safe as well?

4

διὰ τί ἐγὼ οὐ καταβαίνω καὶ περισκοπῶ ἀκριβῶς;

Why don’t I go down below and look around carefully?

5

For I [am] the captain: so it [is] my job, and our safety [depends] on me.

6

(The captain goes down and looks around.)

7

(But Dikaiopolis remains above.)

8

ΔΙΚ.

DIK. Now, O Poseidon, save us [bring us safely] into the harbor.

9

For we always make sacrifices to you, and you always save people from the sea.

10

We are now dying badly:

11

for our ship is clearly sinking into the sea, ...

12

our life-boat is clearly drifting away, ...

13

and our safety [is] not assured.

14

(The captain comes up.)

15

ΚΥΒ. (with relief) σιώπα, ὦ Δικαιόπολι.

CAPTAIN Be quiet, Dikaioplis.

16

Our ship is safe, and we also are safe.

17

So we are not in danger.

18

And moreover the harbor is near by.

19

So our safety [is] assured.

20

διὰ τί;

why?
