(Strepsiades wants his son, Pheidippides, to take a particular educational program) ΣΤΡΕΨ.

10

PHEIDIPPIDES What, father?

ΦΕΙΔΙΠΠΙΔΗΣ τί, ὦ πάτερ;

11

STR. Tell me, son, do you love me?

ΣΤΡΕΨ. εἰπέ μοι, ὦ υἱέ, ἆρα φιλεῖς με;

12

PHEI. I [do], and I don’t ever stop [loving you].

ΦΙΔ.

13

STR. Will you love me tomorrow?

ΣΤΡΕΨ. ἆρ’ αὔριον φιλήσεις με;

14

PHEI. By Poseidon here, god of horses, I shall love you tomorrow and I shan’t stop ever.

ΦΙΔ.

15

STR. Don’t ever mention that horsey one, son ...

16

— for that one has the responsibility for my troubles —

17

but listen and obey.

18

PHEI. Look, I am listening and obeying and I shall always obey.

ΦΙΔ.

19

So speak then!

20

What are you ordering?

τί κελεύεις;

21

STR. I shall order a small thing, my son, a very small thing.

22

For I have a plan and I am planning something.

23

Will you obey?

ἀλλὰ πείσῃ;

24

PHEI. I will obey, by Dionysus.

ΦΙΔ.

25

Don’t worry, father.

(he immediately falls asleep)

26

STR. Were you listening?

ΣΤΡΕΨ. ἆρ’ ἤκουες;

27

Or weren’t you listening?

ἢ οὐκ ἤκουες;

28

Or am I speaking in vain?

ἢ μάτην λέγω;

29

I’ll stop you sleeping.

30

PHEI. Yes. I was listening and I am listening and I shall listen.

ΦΙΔ. (wakes up again) ναί.

31

What were you telling me?

ἀλλὰ τί μοι ἔλεγες;

32

STR. I was telling you that I have an idea.

33

PHEI. What is your idea?

ΦΙΔ. ἀλλὰ τίς ἡ διάνοια;

34

What have you in mind and what are you planning?

τί ἐν νῷ ἔχεις, καὶ τί διανοῇ;

35

Were you saying?

ἆρ’ ἔλεγες;

36

STR. No, but I will [tell you].

37

For perhaps this idea will stop us somehow from our debts.

38

I’m planning something big.

39

PHEI. Tell [me].

ΦΙΔ.

40

What is your plan, father?

τίς ἡ σὴ διάνοια, ὦ πάτερ;

41

What will you order?

τί κελεύσεις;

42

How will the idea save us?

πῶς ἡ διάνοια σώσει ἡμᾶς;

43

How shall we stop from our debts?

πῶς παυσόμεθα ἐκ τῶν χρεῶν;

44

STR. You will do it?

ΣΤΡΕΨ. σὺ δὲ ποιήσεις;

45

PHEI. I will do it, by Dionysus.

ΦΙΔ.
