How did India become the jewel in the crown of the British Empire?
Mughal Rule crumbled and British took advantage. Saw India as source of raw materials. Built roads and railways. Ruralization. Deforestation. Built western schools.
What were the reasons for European presence in South Asia?
They were interested in fine luxurious Asian products but they wanted it for a cheaper price.
State differences between company rule and crown rule.
In the company rule the leaders were different and the money went to the company. Rather in crown rule all power went to the queen, money went to Britain and they started the viceroy rule.
Causes and outcomes of the sepoy mutiny.
Made sepoys bite pork fat covered funs to load them. Made sepoys travel overseas when that was against their religion. They responded by killing British people but they were silenced and killed as well.
How did Britain control the economy of India?
Built railroads which meant they it was cheap to travel and they could control all movement around India. They also caused ruralization which made natives lose jobs and start over.
How did British change the lives of the native Indians?
Made natives be sepoys. Changed religion to Christianity. Ruralization. Deforestation.

Amritsar Massacre pushed people over the edge. Then Gandhi and Indian National Congress pushed for independence. Salt March got attention of media around the world who criticized the British.
Describe role that Gandhi played in the independence of Indian.
Preached satyagraha which not only rebelled against the British but made them look bad when they retaliated. Salt March and Amritsar Massacre were Gandhi’s actions. Boycotted British goods as well.

What were the causes of the partition?
Most of the Indian National Congress, who was responsible for independence, were Hindu. So Muslims felt that they would be a minority in independent India.
What are the causes of the Kashmir crisis?
Leader of Kashmir wanted to join India. But Muslim majority wanted to be part of Pakistan.
What is the impact of the Kashmir Crisis today?
It remains a flashpoint in the tense relations between India and Pakistan –> could be place where and reason war starts between them

The fastest growing country population wise. 2nd largest total population in the world. –> leads to large spread poverty and famine.

Today we know that India is the worlds largest democracy and they depend on the parliament to lead. There is a president and I prime minister. In Pakistan they also have a parliamentary government with a prime minister and a president.

80% Hindu. 13% Islam.

What year did Britain pull out of India? What else happened that year?
They pulled out in 1947 and they gained independence. Pakistan was also created then.
