Chapter 9 (Superficial Structures of Neck) Flashcards
(The Neck)
Between the _____ and the ____, the neck is divided into ____ ____ ___ based on the visible/palable borders of the _____ and ____ muscles.
cranium and the clavicles; 4 major regions; sternocleidomastoid and trapezius
Sternocleidomastoid region:
- Sternocleidomastoid muscle
- Superior part of the external jugular vein
Lesser supraclavicular fossa:
Inferior part of internal jugular vein
Posterior cervical region:
- Trapezius muscle
- Suboccipital region
(Lateral cervical region - Posterior Triangle)
Occipital triangle:
- Part of external jugular vein
- Posterior branches of cervical plexus of nerves
- Spinal accessory nerve (CN XI)
- Trunks of brachial plexus
(Lateral cervical region - Posterior Triangle)
Omoclavicular (subclavian) triangle
- Subclavian artery (third part)
- Part of subclavian vein (sometimes)
- Suprascapular artery
(Anterior Cervical Region - Anterior Triangle)
Submandibular (digastric) triangle
- Hypoglossal nerve (CN XII)
- Parts of facial artery and vein
(Anterior Cervical Region - Anterior Triangle)
Carotid triangle
**Too much to write. refer to box in slide)
(Anterior Cervical Region - Anterior Triangle)
Muscular (omotracheal) triangle
Sternothyroid and sternohyoid muscles; thyroid and parathyroid glands
(Muscles of Neck)
Platysma (innervation and action)
- Innervation: Cervical branch of facial nerve (CN VII)
- Action: Draws corners of mouth inferiorly and widens it in expressions of sadness and fright
(Muscles of Neck)
Sternocleidomastoid (SCM)
- Innervation: Spinal Accessory Nerve (CN XI) - motor; C3 and C4 nerves - pain and proprioception
- Action: tilts head to same side, extends neck, flexes cervical vertebrae, extends superior cervical vertebrae
(Vascular Supply)
Arteries:
- Subclavian arteries and branches
- Common carotid arteries and branches
(Vascular Supply)
Veins:
- External jugular vien
- Subclavian veins
- Brachiocepahlic vein
