PTSD
mental health disorder that occurs after a traumatic event
S/S
- intrusive memories
- avoidance
- alterations in emotions
Bipolar Disorder
A mental disorder causing intense emotional instability and impulsivity. Has manic episodes and splitting (something is either good or bad, no inbetween)
Schizoprenia
A mental illness that causes a variety of symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, disorganised thoughts, flat affect, apathy, social withdrawal, and cognitive impairments
Major depressive disorder
To be diagnosed must feel depressed mood or loss of interest everyday for 2 weeks plus 5 other symptoms:
- sleep
- anhedonia (lack of intrest in life)
- guilt
- tired
- can’t concentrate
- appetite changes
- agitation
- suicidal ideation
Timing of alcohol withdrawl vs delirium tremons
AW, starts 8 hours after last drink and peaks at 24-72hrs
DT occur 48-96 hrs after drinking
Conversion disorder
Presence of neurological symptoms such as paralysis or blindness from psychological stress
Antisocial personality disorder
Mental disorder characterized by disregard for others
S/S
- often disregard rules
- irresponisble
- blame others
- impulsive
- fight a lot
Agoraphobia
The fear of being in situations that might cause helplessness, pain, or embarassement
Anorexia Nervosa (C/O)
A mental disorder that prevents patients from eating due to an intense fear of gaining weight
C/o:
- lanugo (baby hair?)
- amenorrhea
- fluid and electrolyte imbalance
- decreased metablic rate
- cold intolerance
- osteoporosis
- HOTN and bradycardia
- Low WBC and RBC
- metabolic acidosis
Histrionic Personality Disorder
Health condition characterized by excessive emotion and attention seeking behaviours
S/S
- self dramatizing, attention seeking, overly friendly, seductive, demands immediate gratification, little tolerance for frustration
ADHD
- inattention, distractibility, and/or hyperactivity
- symptoms last >6 months and are present in 2+ environments
- presents before 12
- causes significant distress/disruption
Bulemia Nervosa (bahviours and S/S)
Eating disorder characterized by cycles of overreating followed by compensatory behaviours:
- self-induced vomiting
- excessive excerise
- fasting
- misuse of laxatives
S/S
- russell sign (callouses on knuckles from vomit induction)
- normal to elevated bmi
- dehydration
- hypokalemia
- metabloic alkalosis
Electroconvulsive therapy
medically induced seizures
- NPO 6-8hrs prior
- pt given anesthesia and muscle relaxant
- no driving
- muscle loss and confusion normal
- do not give antiseizure meds
Serotonin syndrome
Excess serotoninergic activity in the brain, caused by SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs
S/S
- 2-72 hrs post med admin
- increased excitability in neuro: high fever, diarrhea, tachycardia
- muscluar excitablity: hyperreflexia, clonus, rhabdo
- Changes in mental status
Avoidant Personality Disorder
Avoidance d/t fear of rejection/criticism, starts early in adulthood. Causes impairment or distress

- stimulants
- SNRIs
Borderline Personality Disorder
- Intense impulsivity
- Emotional dysregulation (inappropriate anger)
- Unstable relationships (splitting)
- Poor self image
Paranoid Personality Disorder
Pervasive pattern of mistrust and suspiciousness. Pt interprets motives as malevolent. Often preceds schizophrenia
