Priapism
Painful erection lasting than 2hrs. Often associated with sickle cell anemia
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Infection of fallopian tubes and uterus and can cause ectopic pregnancy
Risk fatcors
- multiple partners
- hx of clamydia or gonorrhea
- partner with STI
- Lack of barrier contraceptive use
- Age 15-25
Perimenopause (S/S, Tx)
Ovarian function declines and estrogen levels descrease
S/S: vaginal dryness, breast tenderness, weight gain, hair loss
Tx:
- calcium and vitamin D
- Hormonal replacent therapy ( can cause edema)
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Many ovarian cysts from excess estrogen and testosterone
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) (Tx)
Gradual and abnormal prostate enlargment
Tx:
- alpha-adrenergic antagonist (relaxes smooth muscle: tamsulosin, doxazosin)
- 5-alpha reductase (hormonal manipulation)
- Saw Palmetto (herbal)
Prostatitis
Inflammation of prostate usually bacterial infection
Can people with marfan syndrome get pregnant
They can get pregnant but should avoid it due to high maternal mortality rates
