Neuro Flashcards
(15 cards)
Facial Nerves
Time frame to give tPA post stroke
Within 4.5 hrs
Aphasia
- Receptive: impaired comrehension of speech and writing
- Expressive: impaired speech and writing
Apraxia
Loss of ability to perform a learned movement
Dysarthia
Weakness of muscles used for speech
Early and late meningitis signs for adults
- Early: fever, headache, vomiting
- Late: neck stiffness, brudzinski (bend neck=knees bend), kerning (leg up 90 degrees hurts)
Early and late meningitis signs for peds
- Early: fever, headache, vomitng
- Late: rash, neck stiffness
Early and late meningitis signs for neonates
- Early: poor feeding aka poor sucking
- Late: bulging fontales
Tx of ICP
- Hypertonic saline
- Osmotic diuretic
- Stool softener
- Muscle relaxers
S/S of ICP
Cushing triad
- bradycardia
- widening pulse pressure
- cheyenne strokes respirations (dying person resp)
Guillain Barre Syndrome
Autoimmune disorder that attacks the peripheral nervous system, typically triggered by infection or vaccination
- Last 4-6 months, but may have lasting neuro issues
- S/S start low and ascend
Myasthenia Gravis (Tx)
Chronic autoimmune disorder that affect the neuromuscular junction, limiting impulses sent for muscle contraction.
Tx: anticholinerase inhibitors: pyridostigmine (allows acetylcholine to stick around and trigger muscles
Multiple Sclerosis (S/S)
Autoimmune disorder causing the breakdown of myelin sheaths
S/S: burning and pain, electric shock sensation, parenthesis, muscle weakness, spasma
ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
Severe neurodegenerative disease causing muscle spasms, weakness, twitching. 3-5 years to live
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (S/S)
Life threatening reaction to psych meds (1st gen typically, haloperidol, risperidone)
- Occurs 1-3 days post exposure
- S/S: muscle rigidity, fever, change in LOC
