Auditory and Visual Flashcards
(8 cards)
S/S of retinal detachment
- Flashes of light
- Curtain over eyes
- Floaters
What are the two types of glaucoma
- Acute angle closure glaucoma: medical emergency. IOP increases quickly causing severe pain, reduced central vision, blurred vision, and redness
- Chronic open angle glaucoma: gradual loss of peripheral vision and difficulty adjusting to light
How is glaucoma caused
When aqueous humor cannot drain it increases IOP, putting pressure on occular nerve. This causes slow vision loss. Once vision losss occurs it cannot be fixed
Medications for glaucoma
- Opthalmic beta-blocker to decrease IOP (timolol)
- diuretics to reduce IOP
- Avoid anticholinergics
What is Cataracts
Cloudy areas in lenses causing blurred vision
What is Macular degeneration
Deterioration of central portion of retina. It is age related and a vasculature problem.
What is Meniere Disease
Excess fluid in ear causing vertigo, tinnitus, and eventual hearing loss
Triggers include: alcohol, salt, allergies, and smoking
What is Otitis Externa
AKA swimmers ear, and infection of the outer ear cannal
S/S
- rapid onset of symptoms
- ear pain and tenderness
- pruritus
- swelling
- purulent drainage
