Q

Processing Centers of the Human Brain

A
  • The cerebellum is responsible for coordination and control. The cerebrum is the part of the brain associated with the intellect.
  • The various lobes of the cerebrum have specialized functions including speech, senses, vision, and hearing.
  • The limbic system is a primitive part of the brain responsible for emotions and memory

Q

cerebellum

A
  • The cerebellum is responsible for coordination and control. For example, your cerebellum allows you to stand on your toes without falling. The cerebellum does this by sensing the position of joints and lengths of muscles. It makes the changing of positions very smooth.

Q

cerebrum

A
  • The cerebrum is divided into two hemispheres, the right and left hemisphere. The corpus callosum connects the right and left hemispheres and allows for communication between them. The cerebral cortex contains most of the brain’s activity. It is about 5mm deep and makes up about 80% of the mass of the brain. Below the cortex is white matter and below that is basal nuclei, all of which are part of the cerebrum.
  • The basal nuclei are involved in motor coordination.
Parkinson’s disease is associated with a degeneration of the basal nuclei.

Q

lobes

A
  • Each lobe of the cerebrum has a unique set of functions.
  • The frontal lobe controls voluntary centers. The left side of the frontal lobe is involved in controlling speech.
  • The occipital lobe is involved in vision and visual
    associations.
  • The temporal lobe is involved in the sense of smell and hearing.
  • The parietal lobe is involved in the perception of touch and pressure. It also plays a role in speech and reading.

Q

limbic system

A
  • The limbic system of the brain is a primitive part of the brain. It is involved in emotion and memory. The limbic system includes regions of the thalamus, hypothalamus,
cerebral cortex, basal nuclei, and the hippocampus.
