biological approach-biological structures Flashcards
(6 cards)
what are the 6 AO1 points you must know for the biological approach- biological structures?
-Focus on the brain
-Localisation of function
-Structure of the nervous system
- Role of the peripheral nervous system
-Neurons and synaptic transmission
-Brain imaging evidence
How does the biological approach view the brain?
Different brain areas control different behaviours, e.g. the frontal lobe for decision-making.
What is localisation of function?
Specific brain areas have specific roles, e.g. Broca’s area for speech, Wernicke’s for understanding language.
What is the central nervous system (CNS)?
The brain and spinal cord — it processes info and controls behaviour.
What does the peripheral nervous system (PNS) do?
It carries messages between the CNS and body, including involuntary functions via the autonomic nervous system.
How do psychologists study brain structures?
Using fMRI and PET scans to observe active brain areas during tasks
