social learning theory- the basic assumptions Flashcards
(7 cards)
what are the 6 AO1 points you must know for the basic assumptions of social learning theory?
- Behaviour is learned through observation and imitation
-The role of vicarious reinforcement - Importance of mediational (cognitive) processes
- Learning and performance are not the same
- Identification with role models
-Bandura’s research support
How is behaviour learned in Social Learning Theory?
Through observation and imitation of others, especially role models
What is vicarious reinforcement?
Learning by watching someone else being rewarded or punished, which affects imitation.
What are the mediational processes in SLT?
Attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation—cognitive steps between observing and imitating behaviour
How does SLT distinguish between learning and performance?
Behaviour can be learned without being performed until later, depending on motivation.
What is identification in SLT?
People imitate role models they identify with (e.g., similar age, gender, or admired traits); this is called modelling.
What did Bandura’s Bobo doll study demonstrate?
Children imitated aggressive behaviour shown by adults, especially when rewarded, showing observation, imitation, and vicarious reinforcement.
