Esophagus Flashcards
(5 cards)
Why is esophageal surgery a bad idea?
Poor healing potential
* No serosa
* Segmental blood supply
* Constant motion (peristalsis, diaphragm)
* Tension
* Poorly mobilized (anchored)
* Lacks omentum
Describe the gross anatomy of the esophagus
Cervical, thoracic, abdominal segments
Left –> right –> left
Upper sphincter = cricopharyngeus muscle
Lower sphincter
Describe the microscopic anatomy of the esophagus, noting the difference between cats and dogs
Mucosa = longitudinal folds
* Cats have transverse ripples in caudal 1/3
Submucosa
Muscularis
* Dogs striated throughout
* Cats smooth muscle at termination
Adventitia (vs serosa)
What suture patterns and material should be used for esophageal surgery?
Double layer
Continuous, appositional
* Interrupted for anastomosis
Absorbable monofilament
* Maxon or PDS
What conditions of the esophagus are treated surgically?
- Trauma
- Hiatal hernia
- Stricture
- Perforation
- Intusussception
- Diverticulum
- Vascular ring anomalies
