What is the most common cause of left apical systolic murmurs in old small dogs?
Mitral regurgitation due to myxomatous (degenerative) mitral valve disease
What clinical signs are associated with MMVD?
Dyspnea
Tachypnea
Increased lung sounds/crackles

What is a normal VLAS in dogs?

Whys is it important to check blood pressure in dogs with MMVD?
Systemic hypertension can increase LV afterload and worsen mitral insufficiency
What is the chronic management of CHF in dogs with MMVD?
Low sodium diet
ACEi
Furosemide
Spironolactone
Pimobendan
Stage A MMVD
At risk breeds with no current disease
No treatment
Stage B1 MMVD
MMVD without cardiac remodeling
No treatment
Stage B2 MMVD
MMVD with significant cardiac remodeling without CHF
Pimobendan 0.3mg/kg
Stage C MMVD
MMVD with CHF
DAFSP treatment
Stage D MMVD
Refractory CHF
DAFSP treatment, up-titrate furosemide as needed
