Oral Surgery Flashcards
(20 cards)
Define: Incisional Biopsy
When are they appropriate?
Removal of a small section of the mass
Large tumors, tumors with high probability of malignancy
Define: Excisional Biopsy
When are they appropriate?
Removal of all gross disease
Small tumors, tumors attached by a stalk of tissue, tumors with high probability of being benign, tumors where incisional biopsy would cause severe side effects
What are considered features of malignancy in the oral cavity?
What are (3) hyperplastic oral lesions in dogs?
Gingival hyperplasia
Peripheral odontogenic fibroma
Focal fibrous hyperplasia
What are (3) odontogenic tumors in dogs?
Embryonic tooth structures made it
Peripheral odontogenic fibroma
Canine acanthomatous ameloblastoma
Odontoma
What are (3) non-odontogenic tumors in dogs?
Malignant melanoma
Squamous cell carcinoma
Fibrosarcoma (histo low, bio high)
Features: Peripheral Odontogenic Fibroma
Slow growing, non-ulcerated (unless it is being traumatized)
Variable radiographic appearance based on ossifying or fibrous component
Originates in the periodontal ligament
Treatment: Peripheral Odontogenic Fibroma
Surgical excision
May require extraction of the underlying tooth if it recurs
Peripheral Odontogenic Fibroma
Peripheral Odontogenic Fibroma
Features: Canine Acanthomatous Ameloblastoma
Gingival mass with an irregular surface
Benign tumor with invasive properties (but will not metastasize)
Can grow quickly (biopsy can make it angry)
Most commonly found in rostral oral cavity
Treatment: Canine Acanthomatous Ameloblastoma
Wide surgical excision (1 cm margins) - dorsal rim excision
Prognosis is excellent with wide surgical excision
Canine Acanthomatous Ameloblastoma
Which mass is most likely if it gets angry with biopsy?
Canine Acanthomatous Ameloblastoma
Canine Acanthomatous Ameloblastoma
Features: Odontoma
Usually associated with unerupted teeth (young dogs)
Can be very extensive
Associated with small tooth-like structures called denticles
Treatment: Odontoma
Surgical enucleation
Good prognosis with surgical removal
Odontoma
Peripheral odontogenic fibroma
Focal fibrous hyperplasia or fibrosarcoma
