Flashcards in Training Manual Article 5 - Ladders Deck (28):
What are the lengths of a roof ladder?
What are the lengths of a straight ladder?
Roof - 14', 16' 20'
Straight - 16' & 20'
Rest position vs Park position
Rest - when the ladder is laid flat on the ground with the rungs in a horizontal position
Park - ladder is on the ground on one beam with rungs vertical-used in preparing to lift in the 20' range.
What is the rung side
The main beam side to which the rungs are attached. The rung side of wood ladders is also the carrying and climbing side.
Swelled center tapered rungs
Types of materials for wood ladder
Being tapered truss construction
Trusses - made of old growth, continuous grain Douglas Fir
Rungs - made of hickory
Cross beams, slide guides and wear parts are made of Red Oak
What are the types of ladder construction
Solid beam as in 'I" beam or channel beam construction or
Trussed (some aluminum and Tapered Truss (wood)
What is the NFPA guideline for ground ladders
NFPA 1931, Standard Design of Fire Dept Ground Ladders
Fly section differences with aluminum and wood ladders
Aluminum fly out or away from the objective
Wood ladders are climbed with the fly section in
What are the general uses for ladders
Fire Stream Operations
What shall be done prior to movement of a ladder
Members shall look up and assure the tip is clear of obstructions
How are member referred to when carrying a ladder
How are the members referred to when raising a ladder
Front member (right and left)
Where are ladders spotted
When raised, the top of the ladder will be on the left side of a opening with the tip just below the sill.
For ventilaion, the tip is even with the top of the window on either side.
What is the proper angle for climbing
Approx 70 degrees
When climbing a ladder what are the function of legs and arms
Legs carry the weight
Arms maintain balance
Name the raising methods and what is the basic method
Flat is basic
Who is responsible for the safety of lowering a ladder
With more than one member - the butt member
Who foots the ladder
The bed side member.
What are the fashions of storing a ladder
Mounted on a hydraulically operated ladder rack
Slide out ladder bay
When moving a 30' ladder where do the members stand
two on the bed side and one on the fly side
Straight ladders are carried on what side
The rung side
How long are the two sections of the combination ladder
Two seven foot sections
How are the 24' ext ladders carried
When raising a ladder via beam raise is the fly section toward or away from the object
For wood ladders it is toward, for aluminum it is away
How are the 30' range ladders carried
What is the minimum members for shooting each ladder length
Straight = 2
24 ext = 2 or 3
35 = 4
When shifting a ladder is the fly bedded or not
Fly must be bedded to shift the ladder
