Novice
Benner: Some experience, can identify meaningful aspects or principles
Advanced Beginner
Benner: Same clinical position for 2-3 yrs,
can anticipate nursing care,

Competent
Benner: Over 2-3 yrs experience in same position,
can assess entire situation, can readily xfer knowlege gained, focuses on MANAGING care
Proficient
Benner: DIVERSE experience, can focus on multiple dimensions, skilled to identify patient centered problems or needs of novice nurse

Independent nursing interventions that the nurse initiates without medical orders
