To prevent super-infection: promotes healthy bacterial growth
Probiotics
Symptoms of bacterial superinfection (5)
- bloody, mucus, smelly, severe diarrhea
- rectal bleeding
- abdominal cramping
- colitis
Symptoms of fungal super infection
- thrush
- vaginal discharge
- vaginal itching
- anal itching
Inhibits reproduction of bacteria so WBC can finish them off
Sulfonamides
Uses for Sulfonamides (3)
- UTIs
- burns
- wounds
Sulfonamides: Adverse Reactions
- Crystalluria
- Steven-Johnson syndrome
- Hematological
- Other (vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain…)
Sulfonamides: Teaching
- Take on empty stomach, will glass of water
- Increase fluid intake
- Take all, do not discontinue
- Urine, skin, contact lenses may turn orange
- Photosensitivity
Action: Inhibits walls synthesis, or breaks bacterial cell wall

Use: Infections, Staph/Strep, Pneumonia

Penicillins: Adverse Reactions
- GI: Glossitis, Stomatitis, abdom pain…
- Sore tongue or mouth
- Pain at IM or IV injection sites
- Decreased RBC, WBC, platelets
