The loss of the voice
aphonia
Temporary cessation of breathing
apnea
Abnormally slow breathing
bradypnea
An expression of the ability of lung tissue to distend when filled with air
compliance
An abnormal respiratory sound heard on auscultation during inspiration; can be a bubbling noise or a popping sound. Does not clear with coughing.
crackles
A bluish tinge to the skin caused by lack of oxygen and accumulation of carbon dioxide in the blood
cyanosis
Labored or difficult breathing
dyspnea
To spit out saliva or cough up materials from the air passageways leading to the lungs.
expectorate
An excessive amount of carbon dioxide in the blood.
hypercapnia
An abnormally low level of carbon dioxide in the blood, resulting from hyperventilation.
hypocapnia
Deficiency of oxygen
hypoxia
An abnormally increased curvature of the thoracic spine, which gives a “hunchback” appearance.
kyphosis
The ability to breath easily only in the upright position
orthopnia
Supplying tissues and organs with nutrients and oxygen by blood flow through the arteries.
perfusion
A substance expelled by coughing or clearing the throat.
sputum
A harsh, high-pitched respiratory sound such as the inspiratory sound often heard in acute laryngeal obstruction.
stridor
Abnormal rapidity of respiration.
tachypnea
A form of rhonchus characterized by a high-pitched musical quality caused by air flow through a narrowed airway.
wheeze
A sound like that of hair rubbed between the fingers; occurs when bone fragments rub together
crepitation
Airway management with a catheter or tube inserted through the mouth or nose into the trachea

An inflammation of the pharynx accompanied by purulent infection.
follicular pharyngitis
