Q

What are Isotonic solutions used to treat?

A

they are used to expand circulating intravascular (plasma) fluid volume. Often used for fluid loss because of vomiting, diarrhea, surgical procedures, and also hyponatremia (low sodium)

Q

Should a dehydrated patient with normal blood pressure be given a isotonic, hypotonic, or hypertonic crystalloid?

A

Hypotonic because it will hydrate cells without expanding plasma volume and increasing BP

Q

Should a dehydrated patient with low blood pressure be given an isotonic, hypotonic, or hypertonic crystalloid?

A

Isotonic because normal saline or 5% Dextrose in Water will cause blood pressure to rise because of the increasing plasma volume
