What is it used for

A

Used to prevent bronchospasm in people with asthma or COPD. It inhibits nasal secretions but does not have decongestant action.

Adverse effects

A

Dry mouth, nausea, GI distress
Bitter taste
headache, cough, blurred vision, paradoxical bronchospasm, worsening of narrow-angle glaucoma

Contraindications

A

hypersensitivity to soya lecithin or related food products such as soybean and peanut
closed-angle glaucoma or urinary tract obstruction

How does it work?

A

blocks cholinergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle. Intranasal blocks parasympathetic receptors, thus reducing nasal hypersecretions

Drug interactions

A

anticholinergics (atropine)

Pramlintide because both slow GI peristalsis and can cause nausea, vomiting, or constipation
