Informed Consent
For consent to be legally valid, it must be informed consent, or consent given based on full disclosure of information.
By law you must get a patient’s consent before you can provide medical care, treatment, or transport.
What are 4 types of consent?
- Informed
- Expressed
- Implied
- Involuntary
Expressed Consent

Implied Consent

Involuntary Consent

Refusal of Treatment and/or Transport
A competent adult has the right to refuse treatment.
You must inform the patient of the risks and consequences involved in refusing care.
Must have the patient sign a “release from liability” form.
If patient refuses to sign then you need to obtain a witness signature.
When in doubt always treat the patient or contact Medical Control for advice.
