मद्यं यथा द्विजातीनां मद्यपानां यथा हविः ।
भक्ष्यमभक्ष्यतामेति तथान्येषामपि द्विज ॥ ५८ ॥ (?)

A

WHAT IT SAYS IS THIS:
“Oh brahman (द्विज), just like liquor for brahmins, just like the holy sacred oblation (हविः) for drunkards, what is eatable goes to uneatability (अभक्ष्यता f. [ND]) in this way for different people/creatures.”
THAT’S IT. SO SIMPLE.
BUT DISTINGUISH अभक्ष्यता f. [ND] == ‘uneatability’ (HERE ACC == अभक्ष्यताम्) FROM भक्षयताम् PRES ACT PPL GEN PL M FROM √भक्ष् CS X भक्षयति ‘to cause to be eaten’ HERE BASICALLY W/O CS FORCE == ‘of those eating’.
\
PREVIOUS CONFUSION IS RECORDED BELOW.
\
मद्यं यथा द्विजातीनां मद्यपानां यथा हविः ।
भक्ष्यमभक्ष्यतामेति तथान्येषामपि द्विज ॥ ५८ ॥ (?)
I AM NOT SURE ABOUT THIS COUPLET, FOR WHICH B&K PROVIDE NO NOTE AND WHICH IS NOT FOUND IN JHA.
THE POINT SEEMS TO BE THAT THE HAWK CRITICIZES HUMANS (SPECIFICALLY BRAHMANS) FOR DRINKING ALCOHOL (WHICH IS NOT THEIR NATURAL FOOD) WHILE CRITICIZING PREDATORY ANIMALS LIKE HIM FOR EATING MEAT, WHICH IS THEIR NATURAL FOOD.
\
एति (?) WHAT IS THE SUBJECT? WHO IS GOING? SHOULD THIS BE इति ?
\
द्विज VOC IS OK IF ADDRESSED BY THE HAWK TO THE BRAHMAN, BUT WOULD NEED TO BE NOM द्विजः TO PROVIDE A SUBJECT FOR एति .
\
मद्यप COULD THIS MEAN BEE? DICTIONARIES HAVE ONLY ‘DRUNKARD’.
\
हविः SENSE HERE IN CONTEXT?

वृथाचारम् (?)

A

वृथाचारम् IT’S SIMPLE. THE वृथा GOES WITH आचारम् दण्डयितुमर्हसि ‘Why do you wrongly/vainly deem it right to punish?’ AND आचारम् IS INTERNAL OR DOUBLE ACC WITH माम् ‘…(to punish) me for my good conduct’
THAT’S GOT TO BE IT!
\\\\\\\\\\\\
वृथाचारम् (?) I THINK THIS MUST WORK AS AN ADV. == ‘in vain, vainly, to no purpose’ - AND REFER TO THE BRAHMAN’S CONDUCT, NOT THE HAWK, WHO HAS JUST JUSTIFIED HIS OWN CONDUCT. THE BRAHMAN ‘deems it worthy it punish the hawk by employing vain/fruitless gestures’ (?)
\
OR MAYBE IT IS NOT A COMPOUND? MAYBE वृथा आचारम् SEPARATELY: ‘you deem it worthy to punish, in vain, me for my conduct (DOUBLE ACC.) ???

समबुधि f.

A

समबुधि f. [ND]
IGNORE THE PART BELOW. THIS WORD JUST MEANS “consistency of mind” AND THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS COUPLET IS THE SAME AS HORACE, AP 125-127. THAT CONSISTENCY EVEN IN SINNING IS BETTER THAN BEING INCONSISTENT. BUT THIS MEANS WE HAVE TO TAKE विचारिन् TO MEAN ‘wanton’ RATHER THAN ‘inconsistent’ HERE. STILL, I THINK THIS IS RIGHT.
\\\\\\\\\
I THINK THIS HAS TO MEAN ‘the mindset of seeing all creatures (good/bad, human/animal) as the same/equal’ (?)
COMMON SENSE (?) - I.E. EVERYONE, GOOD OR BAD, KNOWS HOW THE WORLD WORKS - THAT EVERYONE HAS TO EAT, ETC, SO… “COMMON SENSE”
