ध्यानव्याजमुपेत्य … पातु वः ॥१४॥

A

ध्यानव्याजमुपेत्य … पातु वः ॥१४॥
THE SENSE OF THE VERSE (WHICH I CANNOT FIND IN JHA) SEEMS TO BE THIS:
“Having resorted to the mere pretext of study, whom (FEMALE) do you think of, having opened your eye for an instant? Look at this man, wounded with the arrow of Love! Although a rescuer (त्रातृ) [EITHER SINCE YOU CAN RESCUE YOURSELF SIMPLY BY LAPSING OR BECAUSE MONKS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE RESCUERS] you do not rescue him. You are filled with vain compassion [AS A MONK YOU HAVE COMPASSION FOR ALL BEINGS - EXCEPT IN THIS CASE YOURSELF]. Whence is there another man more cruel than you? Enviously addressed thus by the she-demons, may the Lord Buddha protect you (PL.)”
THE IDEA SEEMS TO BE THAT THESE ARE THE TEMPTATION-CAUSING THOUGHTS THAT RUN THROUGH A MONK’S MIND AS HE TRIES TO MEDITATE. THE SPEAKER ATTRIBUTES THEM TO THE SHE-DEMONS WHO ARE ENVIOUS OF THE MONK’S POWER - AND ASKS THE LORD BUDDHA TO PROTECT SUCH MONKS. THE MONK IS BOTH THE MAN SMITTEN BY LUST AND THE RESCUER - HE COULD “RESCUE” HIMSELF BY GIVING IN TO LUST IF HE WANTED TO. BUT HE REFUSES. SO HIS IS CRUEL - TO HIMSELF. OR SO THE SHE-DEMONS SAY.
