ΛΥΣΙΣΤΡΑΤΗ ἀλλὰ καὶ τοῦτ’ εὖ παρεσκευεσάμεθα, ὅτι καταλήψομεθα τήμερον τὴν ἀκρόπολιν, θύειν δοκοῦσαι.

LYSISTRATA “Oh, but we have persuaded this well too, because today we shall take the Acropolis, by seeming to be sacrificing.”

καταλαβοῦσαι δέ, φυλάξομεν αὐτὴν αὐτῷ τῷ ἀργυρίῳ.

“Having taken it, we shall guard it, money and all.”

(βοήν τινα ἐξαίφνης ἀκούει ἡ Λαμπιτώ, ἀκούσασα δέ τὴν Λυσιστράτην προσαγορεύει.)

(Suddenly Lampito hears a shout and, having heard it, she speaks to Lysistrata.)

ΛΑΜ. τίς ἐβόησε;

LAM. “Who shouted?”

τίς αἴτιος τῆς βοῆς;

“Who was responsible for that shout?”

ΛΥ. τοῦτ’ ἐκεῖνο ὃ ἔλεγον.

LYS. “This is what I was talking about.”

αἱ γὰρ γρᾶες, ἃς ἔδει τὴν ἀκρόπολιν τῆς θεοῦ καταλαβεῖν, νῦν έχουσιν.

”For the olde women, who had to take the Acropolis of the goddess, now hold it.”

ἀλλ’ ὦ Λαμπιτοῖ, σὺ μὲν, οἴκαδε ἐλθοῦσα, τὰ παρ’ ὑμῖν εὖ θές, ...

“But, Lampito, you go off home and put affairs among you [Spartans] in good order, ...”

... ἡμεῖς δ’ εἰσελθοῦσαι τὴν ἀκρόπολιν, ἣν ἄρτι κατέλαβον αἱ γρᾶες, φυλάξομεν.

“ ... while we go to the Acropolis, which the old women have just taken, and guard it.”

(Suddenly Lysistrata shouts, having spotted a man who is approaching.)

ΛΥ. ἰοὺ ἰοὺ γυναῖκες, ἴτε δεῦρο ὡς ἐμὲ ταχέως.

LYS. “Oh, oh, Women! Come here to me quickly.”

ΚΛΕΟΝΙΚΗ τί δ’ ἐστίν;

KLEONIKE “What is it?”

εἰπέ μοι, τίς ἡ βοή;

“Tell me, what is the shout?”

ΛΥ. ἄνδρα ἄνδρα ὁρῶ προσιόντα.

LYS. “I see a man approaching, a man.”

ὅρᾶτε.

“Look.”

γιγνώσκει τις ὑμῶν τὸν ἄνδρα ὃς προσἔρχεται;

“Does any one of you recognize the man who is approaching.”

ΜΥΡΡΙΝΗ. οἴμοι.

MYRRHINE “Woe is me!”

ΚΛ. ἀλλὰ δῆλον, Λυσιστράτη, ὅτι ἡ Μυρρίνη αὐτὸν ἔγνω.

KLE. “It’s clear, Lysistrata, that Myrrhine has recognized him.”

ἰδοῦσα γὰρ και γνοῦσα ᾤμωξε.

“For after seeing and recognizing him she cried ‘Woe is me!’”

ΛΥ. λέγε, ὦ Μυρρίνη.

LYS. “Speak, Myrrhine.”

ἆρ’ ἡ Κλεονίκη ἀληθῆ λέγει;

“Does Kleonike speak the truth?”

“Have you recognized the man?”

κάμοὶ γὰρ δοκεῖς τὸν ἄνδρα γνῶναι.

“For to me as well you seem to recognize the man.”

ΜΥ. νὴ Δία ἔγνων ἔγωγε.

MYR. “By Zeus, I do recognize him.”

ἔστι γὰρ Κινησίας, οὗ γυνή εἰμι ἐγώ.

“For he is Kinesias, whose wife I am.”

ΛΥ. (reveals her plan) σὸν ἔργον ἤδη τοῦτον, ᾧ συνοικεῖς, ἐξαπατᾶν καὶ φιλεῖν καὶ μὴ φιλεῖν.

LYS. “It’s your job now to trick and love and not to love this man who you live with.”

MYR. “I will shall do these things.”

ΛΥ. καὶ μῆν ἐγὼ συνεξαπατήσαιμ’ ἄν σοι παραμένουσα ἐνθάδε, ...

LYS. “Look, I’ll join you in tricking him by waiting here ...”
