(The old women go away while Kinesias arrives and as he approaches, he laments.)

8

KINESIAS “Oh, poor me, what discomfort tortures me!”

9

LYSISTRATA (speaking from the wall)

10

“Who is this man who has forced his way through the guards without our noticing?”

τίς οὗτος ὃς διὰ τῶν φυλάκων λαθὼν ἐβιάσατο;

11

KIN. “It’s me.”

ΚΙΝ. ἐγώ.

12

LYS. “Are you a man?”

ΛΥ. ἀνὴρ εἶ;

13

KIN. “A man, to be sure.”

ΚΙΝ.

14

LYS. “Won’t you get the hell out of here then?”

ΛΥ. οὐκ ἄπει δῆτ’ ἐκποδών;

15

KIN. “Who are you, who are throwing me out?”

ΚΙΝ. σὺ δ’ εἶ τίς, ἣ ἐκβάλλεις με;

16

LYS. “A guard.”

ΛΥ.

17

KIN. “Woe is me.”

ΚΙΝ.

18

(Speaking to himself)

19

“It’s clear that I must, unlucky as I am, pray to all the gods.”

20

“Perhaps the gods, to whom I am praying, will grant that I can see my wife.”

21

(The man prays.)

22

“(But) all you gods, grant that I may see my wife.”

23

(Again he addresses Lysistrata.)

24

“By the gods, call Myrrhine out here (to me) now.”

25

LYS. “Who are you?”

ΛΥ. (appearing to soften) σὺ δὲ τίς εἶ;

26

KIN. “Her husband, Kinesias of the deme Paionis, with whom she lives.”

ΚΙΝ.

27

(Speaking to himself)

28

“Hurray! Because I’ve prayed, the gods have granted that I can see Myrrhine.”

29

LYS. “Hello, dearest Kinesias.”

ΛΥ.

30

“For we too know your name well.”

31

“For you are always on your wife’s lips.”

32

And in fact taking an apple, she says, ‘How gladly would I give this to Kinesias.’”

33

KIN. “Oh by the gods, am I the man to whom Myrrhine wants to give apples?”

ΚΙΝ. (his passion increasing) ὢ πρὸς θεῶν· ἐγὼ ὁ ἀνὴρ ᾧ Μυρρίνη βούλεται μῆλα διδόναι;

34

LYS. “[Yes] by Aphrodite.”

ΛΥ.

35

“Indeed, even yesterday, when some discussion concerning men arose, your wife said, ‘I consider Kinesias the best of all.’”

36

KIN. “Then go and call her.”

ΚΙΝ. (desperately) ἴθι νυν κάλεσον αὐτήν.

37

LYS. “What then?”

ΛΥ. (stretching out her hand) τί οὖν;

38

“Will you give me something?”

δώσεις τί μοι;

39

KIN. “By Zeus, I’ll give you something.”

ΚΙΝ.

40

“I have this; so what I have, I give to you.”

41

“So you, to whom I give this, call her.”

42

(He gives what he has in his hand to Lysistrata.”

43

LYS. “Well then, I’ll go down and call her for you.”

ΛΥ.

44

(She goes down quickly from the wall.)

45

KIN. “Quickly.”

ΚΙΝ.

46

MYRRHINE (inside) “Don’t you call to him, Lysistrata.”

ΜΥ.

47

“For I don’t want to go down.”

48

KIN. “Myrrhine baby, why are you doing this?”

ΚΙΝ. ὦ Μυρρινίδιον, τί ταῦτα δρᾷς;

49

“Come down with all haste and come here.”

50

MYR. “By Zeus, I won’t.”

ΜΥ. μὰ Δί’ ἐγὼ μὲν οὔ.

51

“I’ll go away instead.”

52

KIN. “Don’t go away, but listen to our baby at any rate.”

ΚΙΝ.

53

(He speaks to the baby, which a servant carries.)

54

“You there, won’t you call mama?”

οὗτος, οὐ καλεῖς τὴν μαμμίαν;

55

BABY “Mama mama mama.”

56

KIN. “You there, what’s up with you?”

ΚΙΝ. αὕτη, τί πάσχεις;

57

“Don’t you pity the baby, which is unwashed?”

ἆρ’ οὐκ οἰκτίρεις τὸ παιδίον, ὃ ἄλουτον ὂν τυγχάνει;

58

MYR. “In that case I do pity it.”

59

KIN. “Come down then, my dear lady, for the sake of the baby.”

ΚΙΝ.

60

MYR. “What it is to bear children!”

ΜΥ. (sighing) οἷον τὸ τεκεῖν.

61

“I must go down.”
