بِالعُدْوة
Meaning: At the edge, near the bank, on the side.

(Surah Al-Anfal 8:42)
القُصْوى
Meaning: The farthest, the most distant, the extreme.
Word Type: Adjective.

الرَّكْب
Meaning: The caravan, the group of riders, the traveling party.

(Surah Al-Anfal 8:42)
مَنامِك
Meaning: Your sleep, your dream.
Word Type: Noun (Masculine).
Context: This word appears in Surah Al-Anfal (8:43), where Allah describes how He showed the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ a vision during مَنَامِكَ (his sleep) in which the enemy appeared fewer in number than they actually were, reinforcing the believers’ confidence and ensuring they would not lose heart before the battle.
Verse:
إِذْ يُرِيكَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِى مَنَامِكَ قَلِيلًۭا ۖ وَلَوْ أَرَىٰكَهُمْ كَثِيرًۭا لَّفَشِلْتُمْ وَلَتَنَٰزَعْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَمْرِ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَلَّمَ ۗ إِنَّهُۥ عَلِيمٌۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ
(Surah Al-Anfal 8:43)
رِيحُكم
Meaning: Your strength, your power, your dominance.
Word Type: Noun (Feminine).

(Surah Al-Anfal 8:46)
بَطَرًا
Meaning: Arrogantly, boastfully, insolently.

Context: This word appears in Surah Al-Anfal (8:47), where Allah warns against those who march forth بَطَرًۭا (with arrogance and boastfulness), seeking to be seen by others and to turn people away from the path of Allah, emphasizing the consequences of pride and showing off.

(Surah Al-Anfal 8:47)

Meaning: He turned back, he retreated, he fled.

وَإِذْ زَيَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ أَعْمَٰلَهُمْ وَقَالَ لَا غَالِبَ لَكُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ مِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَإِنِّى جَارٌۭ لَّكُمْ فَلَمَّا تَرَآءَتِ ٱلْفِئَتَانِ نَكَصَ عَلَىٰ عَقِبَيْهِ وَقَالَ إِنِّى بَرِىٓءٌۭ مِّنكُمْ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰ مَا لَا تَرَوْنَ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ ٱللَّهَ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ شَدِيدُ ٱلْعِقَابِ
(Surah Al-Anfal 8:48)
تَثْقَفَنَّهم
Meaning: You find them, you come across them, you encounter them.
Word Type: Verb
Context: This word appears in Surah Al-Anfal (8:57), where Allah instructs the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that if he تَثْقَفَنَّهُمْ (comes across or finds) those who betray treaties in battle, he should deal with them firmly to deter others, emphasizing the importance of strong leadership in confronting treachery.

فَشَرِّد
Meaning: Scatter them, disperse them, make an example of them.

فَإِمَّا تَثْقَفَنَّهُمْ فِى ٱلْحَرْبِ فَشَرِّدْ بِهِم مَّنْ خَلْفَهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ
(Surah Al-Anfal 8:57)
فانْبِذ
Meaning: Discard, renounce, declare void. (Toss it)

(Surah Al-Anfal 8:58)
يُعْجِزُون
Meaning: They escape, they elude, they make (someone) incapable.

Context: This word appears in Surah Al-Anfal (8:59), where Allah warns the disbelievers that they should not think they can يُعْجِزُونَ (escape or elude) Him, emphasizing that no one can escape Allah’s decree and justice.
Verse:
وَلَا يَحْسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ أَنَّهُمْ سَبَقوا إِنَّهُمْ لَا يُعْجِزُونَ

رِبَاط
Meaning: Preparation, readiness, steadfastness, military stationing.

وَأَعِدُّوا۟ لَهُم مَّا ٱسْتَطَعْتُم مِّن قُوَّةٍۢ وَمِن رِبَاطِ ٱلْخَيْلِ تُرْهِبُونَ بِهِۦ عَدُوَّ ٱللَّهِ وَعَدُوَّكُمْ وَءَاخَرِينَ مِن دُونِهِمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُهُمْ ۚ وَمَا تُنفِقُوا۟ مِن شَىْءٍۢ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ يُوَفَّ إِلَيْكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تُظْلَمُونَ
(Surah Al-Anfal 8:60)
جَنَحوا
Meaning: They incline, they lean toward, they offer (peace).
Word Type: Verb
Context: This word appears in Surah Al-Anfal (8:61), where Allah commands the believers that if the enemy جَنَحُوا (incline toward peace), then they should also accept it and trust in Allah, emphasizing the importance of peace when it is sincerely offered.
Verse:

(Surah Al-Anfal 8:67)
يُثْخِنَ
Meaning: He subdues completely, he overcomes decisively, he establishes dominance.

Context: This word appears in Surah Al-Anfal (8:67), where Allah states that it was not fitting for a prophet to take captives until he يُثْخِنَ (establishes complete dominance) in the land, emphasizing the importance of securing victory before considering taking prisoners.
Verse:
مَا كَانَ لِنَبِىٍّ أَن يَكُونَ لَهُ ٱلْأَسْرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ يُثْخِنَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ تُرِيدُونَ عَرَضَ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱللَّهُ يُرِيدُ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌۭ
(Surah Al-Anfal 8:67)
ءَاوَوا
Meaning: (They) Gave shelter / Gave refuge
Word Type: Verb (Past Tense, Third-Person Masculine Plural)
Context: This word appears in Surah Al-Anfāl (8:72):
“إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَهَاجَرُوا۟ وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَاوَوْا۟ وَنَصَرُوٓا۟ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍۢ…”
— “Indeed, those who have believed and emigrated and strived with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah, and those who gave them shelter and supported them — they are allies of one another…”
The word ءَاوَوْا۟ means “they gave refuge” or “they sheltered”, referring to the Anṣār (the Helpers in Madinah) who welcomed and supported the Muhājirūn (the Emigrants from Makkah).
Verse:
وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَاوَوْا۟ وَنَصَرُوٓا۟ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍۢ…
(Surah Al-Anfāl 8:72)
مُعْجِزي
Meaning: Ones who escape, ones who elude, those who make (someone) incapable of catching them.
Word Type: Noun (Masculine, Plural).
Context: This word appears in Surah At-Tawbah (9:2), where Allah warns the disbelievers that during the four-month respite, they should know that they are not مُعْجِزِي (able to escape or elude) Allah’s power, emphasizing that no one can outrun His decree or justice.

(Surah At-Tawbah 9:2)
يُظَاهِرُوا
Meaning: They support, they assist, they back up.

Context: This word appears in Surah At-Tawbah (9:4), where Allah states that as long as certain polytheists do not يُظَٰهِرُوا (support or assist) others against the believers, their treaty remains valid, emphasizing the importance of honoring agreements unless treachery is committed.

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنقُصُوكُمْ شَيْـًۭٔا وَلَمْ يُظَٰهِرُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدًۭا فَأَتِمُّوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ عَهْدَهُمْ إِلَىٰ مُدَّتِهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ
(Surah At-Tawbah 9:4)
مَرْصَد
Meaning: A waiting place, a place of ambush, a watch-post.
Word Type: Noun (Masculine).
Context: This word appears in Surah At-Tawbah (9:9), where Allah commands that the disbelievers who break their covenants should be fought wherever they are found, and they should be taken, besieged, and watched from every مَرْصَدٍ (ambush point or waiting place), emphasizing the need for vigilance against treachery.
Verse:
فَإِذَا ٱنسَلَخَ ٱلْأَشْهُرُ ٱلْحُرُمُ فَٱقْتُلُوا۟ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ وَخُذُوهُمْ وَٱحْصُرُوهُمْ وَٱقْعُدُوا۟ لَهُمْ كُلَّ مَرْصَدٍ ۚ فَإِن تَابُوا۟ وَأَقَامُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَخَلُّوا۟ سَبِيلَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ
(Surah At-Tawbah 9:5)
اسْتَجَارَك
Meaning: Seeks your protection, asks for refuge, pleads for safety.
Word Type: Verb
Context: This word appears in Surah At-Tawbah (9:6), where Allah commands the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that if a polytheist ٱسْتَجَارَكَ (seeks your protection), he should be granted refuge and allowed to hear the words of Allah before being escorted to a place of safety, emphasizing justice and mercy even in times of conflict.

Meaning: His place of safety, his secure refuge.

يَرْقُبُوا
Meaning: They observe, they uphold, they respect.
