Motivation

Refers to the process of acting to satisfy a goal.

Homeostasis

Maintaining internal equilibrium.

Physiological drives

For proper temperature, food, sex, and to avoid pain.

Intrinsic

Take action because the act itself is rewarding.

Extrinsic

Take action because action is rewarded by outside factors.

Drive-reduction theory

Motivated by need to reduce a negative bodily state.

Opponent-process theory

Motivated by a desire to maintain homeostasis and counteract a deviation from normal state.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs

The order of needs we are motivated to satisfy: bodily needs--safety needs--belonging/love--esteem--self actualization (top of hierarchy).
