What is the mood at the beginning?
A little spooky
How does the author create that mood?
He talks about magical creatures.
How did the town of Coven Tree get its name?
The very name of the village comes from the huge, twisted tree down at the cross-roads where groups of witches –covens– used to meet.
Witches, or covens, gathered at the big oak tree.
What time of the year does the story begin? (Setting)
Summer, the third Saturday in June
What is the manner of writing in the Prologue? How do you know?
From the first person point of view - Stew Meat tells story
Who is Thaddeus Blinn?
An “outsider” who paid $10 for the privilege of setting up a booth at the Coven a Tree Church Social. He promised to give you whatever you ask for only 50 cents. He was short, fat, wore a white suit with a red vest, a thick gold watch chain, huge mustache, and a toothy smile. Reminded me of Santa Claus, shaved and dressed for warm weather. He was the wish giver.
Why does Stew Meat suspicious of Thaddeus Blinn even though he looked a bit like Santa Claus?
His eyes glowed for a brief moment but even after his eyes didn’t appear quite human. The pupils weren’t round, but long and narrow like the eyes of a snake.
Who were the four people who entered Thaddeus Blinn’s tent? Describe them.
Stew Meat - or Stewart Meade - owner of the Coven Tree General Store; adult
Polly Kemp - 11 year old girl who lives with her widowed mother; she speaks without thought about whether her words will hurt others.
Rowena Jervis - a giddy 15 year old girl; in love with love itself; in love with Henry Piper, a young farm-machinery salesman who came to town twice a year.
Adam Fiske - a 16 year old boy; lived a his pa’s farm which was the driest in the county; he was always toting water from Spider Crick in his wagon with tubs in the back
