What caused the need for governments?
As groups of people began settling down, they found the need for an organized way to resolve problems and oversee tasks such as distributing food.
When did more complex governments first appear in Southwest Asia?
More than 5,000 years ago

What type of political system is the United States?
Nation-State
Name some common features of a nation-state.
- Clearly defined borders
- Have governments, laws and authority over citizens
- Most are divided into smaller states or provinces that contain cities and towns
Name some kinds of governments.
- Autocracies - ruled by a single person
- Oligarchies - ruled by a small group of people
- Democracy - citizens hold political power
- Authoritarian - government holds political power (example - communism)
- Monarchy - ruled by a monarch
What basic principle of government does the United States follow?
Democratic principles
What are some examples of democratic principles?
- Powers are defined by laws that limit its action
- Decides issues by majority rule
- Can not take away the basic rights and freedoms of minority groups or individuals

- Executive - President

Bill of Rights, a part of the Constitution

Today international trade, transportation and communication have linked the world’s people. So as a result we consider ourselves to to citizens of a global community
