5th - Science Unit 1 Lesson 1 combined Flashcards
(48 cards)
What are the particles that move around the nucleus that have a negative charge called?
Electron
What are the particles called in an atom’s nucleus that have a positive charge?
Protons
Be able to explain why atoms usually have no charge.
Usually the number of electrons and protons are equal, so atoms have no overall charge.
Dmitri Mendeleev created what?
The Periodic Table of elements
Be able to read a box from the periodic table and answer questions.
P. 26-27.
- Element Name
- Element Symbol
- Atomic Number
How do you find the atomic mass unit or amu of an element?
To find the amu of an element, you add the number of protons and neutrons together.
Where are the electrons located?
Within the space outside the nucleus of an atom.
How do you find the atomic number of an element?
The atomic number of an element is the number of protons in it. ????
How are elements classified in the periodic table?
There are four classification on the periodic table - metal, metalloid, nonmetal, and artificial.
Be able to list the properties of elements.
One important property of elements is the state of matter at room temperature (solid, gases, or liquid). Another property of elements is the way they combine with other elements.
Be able to find the atomic mass unit of an element.
P. 26 - 27
What is the name of the microscope that uses a needle that is so sensitive that it can show single atoms?
The scanning tunneling microscope
What is one important property of an element at room temperature?
State of matter
Another important property of an element is the way that it does what with other elements?
Reacts
What is the center of an atom?
Nucleus
What makes up an atom?
An atom is made up of the NUCLEUS (the center of the atom) which includes PROTONS and NEUTRONS and ELECTRONS which move within the space outside the nucleus.
An atom’s protons and neutrons have about the same mass, which is called what?
Atomic mass unit or amu
Know what an electron microscope examines.
Special electron microscopes use electrons instead of light particles to examine a sample. They can show single atoms, or the arrangement of atoms.
What charge do the neutrons have?
They have NO electric charge.
What is the number of protons in an atom called?
Atomic number
Special microscopes use what to show the arrangement of atoms?
Electrons
Molecules have properties that are different than the what that they are formed from?
Elements ?
What charge do the protons have?
They have a positive electric charge.
What is matter made of?
Elements
