Fire fighter collisions can be grouped in to the following five basic causes:
- Improper backing.
- Reckless driving.
- Excessive speed.
- Lack of skills experience
- Poor vehicle design.
Reckless driving by the public occurs in many forms. Some of the more common problems included:

Unable to stop the apparatus in time to avoid a collision
A lack of driving skills may be caused by the following:
Overconfidence in ones driving ability.
Inability to recognize a dangerous situation.
False sense of security because of good driving record.
Misunderstanding of apparatus capabilities.
Lack of knowledge about how to operate the controls of the apparatus in an emergency.
