What are the three epithelial membranes
Cutaneous
Mucous
Serous
What are the 5 layers of the epidermis
Corneum Lucidum Granulosum Spinosum Basale
What is the synovial membrane
Connective tissue membrane that lines fibrous capsules surrounding joints and secrets a lubricating fluid
Cutaneous membrane
Skin
Mucous membrane
Lines all body cavities that open to the exterior body surface
Serous membranes 2
Visceral- covers the outside of the organ
Parietal- lines a portion of the wall of ventral body cavity
What are the three specific types of serous membranes
Peritoneum- abdominal cavity
Pleura- around the lungs
Pericardium- around the heart
What is the fluid called in joint cavities
Synovial fluid
What is the function of the hypodermis
Anchors skin to underlying organs. Not part of skin. Composed of fat
What happens in the stratum basale
Mitosis
stratum lucidum
Formed from dead cells and is think. Hands, and feet
Stratum corneum
Outermost layer of epidermis with shingle like cells filled with keratin
Where are melanocytes found
Stratum basale
What are the 2 layers of the dermis
Papillary
Reticular
Papillary
Pain receptors and touch receptors
Reticular
Sweat and oil glands. Deep pressure receptors. Blood vessels. Deepest skin layer
What do collagen and elastic fibers do and where are they found
Collagen- toughness
Elastic- elasticity
Dermis
What are the three skin color determinants
Melanin- yellow, brown, black
Carotene- orange, yellow
Hemoglobin- red
What are the types of glands
Sebaceous- oil
Eccrine sweat- skin
Apocrine- hair
Types of cancer
Benign- doesn’t spread
Malignant- spreads
