what category does CN I have and what is the function
olfactory nerve: special sensory: smell
what category does CN II have and what is the function
optic nerve: special sensory: vision
what category does CN III have and what is the function
oculomotor nerve:
somatic motor: extraocular eye muscles
parasympathetic: muscles around lens of the eye
what category does CN IV have and what is the function
trochlear:
somatic motor: one eye muscle (SO4) = superior oblique
what category does CN V have and what is the function
brachial motor: all muscles of mastication
general sensory: sensory to all of head
what category does CN VI have and what is the function
Abducens:
Brachial motor: to one eye muscle: Lateral Rectus (remember mnemonic: SO4,LR6) all others are CNIII (occulomotor)
what category does CN VIII have and what is the function
Facial Nerve:
Brachial motor: muscles of facial expression
Parasympathetic: all glands of head except the parotid and skin glands
General sensory: external auditory meatus and small area around the ear
Special sensory: taste to anterior 2/3 of tongue and palate
what category does CN VIII have and what is the function
Vestibulocochlear
Special sensory: hearing and balance
what category does CN IX have and what is the function
Glossopharyngeal nerve
brachial motor: Stylopharyngeus muscle
Parasympathetic: parotid gland
General sensory: pharynx, middle ear, posterior 1/3 of tongue
special sensory: taste: posterior 1/3 of tongue
visceral sensory: carotid body and carotid sinus
what category does CN X have and what is the function
Vagus nerve:
Brachial motor: pharynx, larynx, soft palate
PNS: smooth muscle and glands of pharynx, larynx, throat and abdomen
General sensory: small area of ear, tympanic membrane, dura mater, posterior cranial fossa, larynx
Special sensory: taste to epiglottis
visceral sensory: visceral sensation from thorax and abdomen
what category does CN XI have and what is the function
Accessory Spinal Nerve:
Brachial motor: sternocleidomastoid and trapezius
what category does CN XII have and what is the function
hyoglossal nerve: all intrinsic and extrinsic tongue muscles except palatoglossus
