Hyperlipidaemia Flashcards
What is hyperlipidaemia?
A condition characterized by elevated levels of lipids in the blood
Includes high cholesterol and triglycerides.
What is palmar xanthoma associated with?
Remnant hyperlipidaemia and less commonly familial hypercholesterolaemia
Palmar xanthoma is a type of xanthoma seen in certain lipid disorders.
What causes eruptive xanthoma?
High triglyceride levels
Eruptive xanthomas present as multiple red/yellow vesicles on extensor surfaces.
Where do eruptive xanthomas typically present?
On the extensor surfaces, such as elbows and knees
They appear as multiple red/yellow vesicles.
What are two causes of eruptive xanthoma?
- Familial hypertriglyceridaemia
- Lipoprotein lipase deficiency
What types of xanthoma are associated with familial hypercholesterolaemia?
- Tendon xanthoma
- Tuberous xanthoma
- Xanthelasma
What are xanthelasma?
Yellowish papules and plaques caused by localized accumulation of lipid deposits
Commonly seen on the eyelid and may occur without lipid abnormalities.
What are the management options for xanthelasma?
- Surgical excision
- Topical trichloroacetic acid
- Laser therapy
- Electrodesiccation
True or False: Xanthelasma is exclusively found in patients with lipid abnormalities.
False
Xanthelasma can be seen in patients without lipid abnormalities.
