(54 cards)
What is metronidazole given?
Gram negative bacteria infection like C.diff
When is gentamicin given?
Resistant MRSA
Clostridium difficile first line
When is vancomycin given?
Staphylococccus aureus infection
Combination with metronidazole for C.diff
When is flucloxacillin given/
Leg ulcer infection
Staphylococcus aureus infection
What is piperacillin-taxobactam sed for?
Broad spectrum for coverage against staphylococcal and sepsis
When is vancomycin sued for?
Resistant MRSA
Clostridium difficile first line investigation
What is the result of interaction of Amlodipine + Simvastatin?
This interaction increases the levels of statin.
What does Penicillin target?
Cell wall.
What broad spectrum antibiotic is used in sepsis?
Tazacosin.
What antibiotic is used in suspected meningococcal?
Benzylpenicillin.
What is the treatment for tonsillitis and sinusitis caused by group A strep?
Phenoxymethylpenicillin.
What is the side effect of amoxicillin?
Amoxicillin causes otitis media.
What is the side effect of flucloxacillin?
Flucloxacillin causes cellulitis and impetigo.
What is the drug class of Cephalosporin?
Beta lactam antibiotic.
What is the drug class of cefuroxime?
Cephalosporin, which is a beta lactam, used in hospital-acquired pneumonia or UTI.
Which drugs are involved in C. diff infection?
Clindamycin, cephalosporin, fluoroquinolones, macrolide, and tetracycline. PPI is also involved.
How does Ceftriaxone act?
It is 3rd gen and crosses BBB, used in gonorrhea and meningococcal.
What is the mechanism of action of fluoroquinolones?
They inhibit DNA gyrase topoisomerase for DNA unwinding.
What are examples of fluoroquinolones?
Ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin.
How do Glycopeptides work and give an example?
They inhibit cell wall synthesis and include Vancomycin, used for MRSA treatment.
When are macrolide antibiotics used?
Used second line if patient has a penicillin allergy, can increase QT interval.
What is a side effect of Erythromycin?
Acne.
What is a side effect of Clarithromycin?
Pertussis.
How do Aminoglycosides act?
They inhibit the 30s ribosomal subunit, includes gentamicin which has a key side effect of urosepsis.
