Erythropoetitin Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is erythropoietin?
A haematopoietic growth factor that stimulates the production of erythrocytes
Where is erythropoietin secreted?
By the kidney in response to cellular hypoxia
What are the main uses of erythropoietin?
To treat anaemia associated with chronic kidney disease and cytotoxic therapy
What is a common side effect of erythropoietin related to blood pressure?
Accelerated hypertension potentially leading to encephalopathy and seizures
What percentage of patients experience increased blood pressure from erythropoietin?
25%
List some common side effects of erythropoietin
- Bone aches
- Flu-like symptoms
- Skin rashes, urticaria
- Pure red cell aplasia
- Raised PCV increases risk of thrombosis
- Iron deficiency 2nd to increased erythropoiesis
What is pure red cell aplasia?
A condition due to antibodies against erythropoietin
What condition can raised PCV from erythropoietin therapy increase the risk of?
Thrombosis (e.g. Fistula)
What are some reasons why patients may fail to respond to erythropoietin therapy?
- Iron deficiency
- Inadequate dose
- Concurrent infection/inflammation
- Hyperparathyroid bone disease
- Aluminium toxicity
What reduces the risk of pure red cell aplasia in erythropoietin therapy?
Darbepoetin
Fill in the blank: Erythropoietin stimulates the production of _______.
