Haemolytic Anaemia Flashcards
(10 cards)
When is haemoglobin electrophoresis used?
To assess patients with suspected thalassemia or sickle cell disease
When is flow cytometry used?
To diagnose paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobin urea
When is coagulation profile used?
If DIC is suspected, and will show schistocytes
When is a direct Coomb’s test required?
To assess for autoimmune haemolytic anaemia which is mediated by IgG and will show schistocytes
Which anaemia occurs de to defect in erythrocytes cell membrane?
Hereditary spherocyotiss. It is autosomal dominant and causes Haemolysis.
What is the confirmatory test for sphercytosis?
Eosin 5-male I die binding test (EMA) which binds to proteins in the erythrocyte cell membrane which are deficient in hereditary spherocytosis
What is the inheritance of G6PD?
X linked and recessive, affecting males and assoicated with Mediterranean or African ethnicities with recent Haemolysis triggers
What is a key indicator of haemolytic anaemia?
High LDH due to breakdown of RBC
