Caring for victims
A
- epinephrine injection can help relax respiratory muscles
- people may carry an anaphylaxis kit and wear a med. ID

Auto-injectors
A
- spring loaded syringe system containing preloaded dose of epinephrine
- available through prescription only
- always follow medical directions, local protocols, manufacturers instructures

Precautions
A
- determine if person has taken other meds
- confirm prescription is for victim
- check expiration date
- ensure liquid is clear, not cloudy
- leave safety cap on until ready to use

General guidelines
A
- scene size up, primary assessment
- look for med ID tag
- call 911
- provide care for life threatening condition
- determine substance involved
- obtain info about the person
- check person from head to toe
- provide care for respiratory distress
- document changes

Administration
A
- locate injection site
- remove safety cap
- hold needle at 90 degree angle to thigh
- quickly and firmly push the tip straight into the outer thigh, you will hear a click
- hold in place for 10s, then massage injection site
- perform ongoing assessment and note any response
- place auto injector in a sharps container and give it to more advanced med personnel
