Limited government
Framers wanted to guard against tyranny
Government is limited to the power given to them in the constitution (constitutionalism)
Constitution tells how leaders who overstep their powers can be removed
Popular sovereignty
People hold the ultimate authority
Government has to respect our freedoms
Representative democracy lets the people elect leaders to make the decisions for them
Republic- we the people
Federalism
Division of power between state and national governments
Some powers are shared
National government has the supreme power
Separation of Powers
So no one holds too much power
Legislative branch makes laws
Executive branch carries out the laws
Judicial branch interprets law
Checks and balances
Prevents the abuse of power in government
Each branch can check the other branches
Judicial review
Courts declare government acts or laws unconstitutional
Supreme Court holds the final check
