Royal - New Hampshire (later), New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia (later) and Georgia(later).
Proprietary - Connecticut, New Hampshire (1623), Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware
Company - Virginia & Massachusetts
What are the different kinds of charters used in setting up the colonies? Describe each type.
Royal - Colonies directly controlled by crown
Proprietary- colonial charter given to one or more individuals (proprietors)
Company - colonial charter given to a company or group of settlers
Be able to identify the social, political, and economic characteristics of the colonies from each region

New England- many religious groups seeking freedom/Theocracy/Fishing-Lumber-Shipbuilding
Middle- indentured servants/representative governments in PA & VA/Breadbasket
Southern- Plantations & slaves (except GA)/ruled by plantation owners/wealthy from lucrative trade

Virginia-founded by Virginia company. Huge original area cut for other colonies
Maryland- Lord Baltimore received grant for refuge colony for English Roman Catholics. As Protestants moved in, Toleration Act passed
North Carolina-grant to 8 Lords by Charles II. Very rural..
South Carolina-split off in 1712 to ease government. Big plantations and ease of shipping via Charleston
Georgia - James Oglethorpe given grant by George II to start colony for poor, jailed debtors. Outlawed slavery and limited land grants.
Later became a Royal Colony. Rice plantations and slaves
What did the economy of the Southern Colonies revolve around?
Farming. Rice, tobacco, indigo - cash crops
Large plantations worked by slaves and indentured servants.
Compare and contrast the labor pools of the Middle and Southern colonies.
Southern - lots of slaves working plantations
Middle - worked by indentured servants
What was the original purpose of Maryland?
Lord Baltimore was creating a refuge for English Roman Catholics
What was the Toleration Act?
Maryland law mandating religious toleration of all Christian denominations. First law of its kind and precursor to First Amendment
How did the Carolinas form. Describe them.
Charles II gave land to 8 lords. Founded Charleston.
North - remained rural and low population
South- Big plantations and shipping out of Charleston. Slaves outnumbered white population
What was the original purpose of James Ogelthorpe’s founding of Georgia?
Provide a havens for poor, jailed debtors from England. Gave them free passage, cattle, land and food until they were self sufficient.
Why did Ogelthorpe ban slavery form the Georgia colony?
Wanted to avoid plantations and keep small farms. Also limited size of land grants.

Why is William Penn important in colonial America?
Quaker refuge in America using land granted his family.
He implemented a democratic system with full freedom of religion, fair trials, elected representatives of the people in power, and a separation of powers — again ideas that would later form the basis of the American constitution.
