Trader from Venice who traveled to Asia along the Silk Road. Wrote about his journey which made people desire goods from Asia.

First of Medici political dynasty who were de facto rulers of Florence during the Italian Renaissance.

Desiderius Erasmus
Desiderius Erasmus took on the subject of church rituals because they were wrong. Thought the churches were corrupted so he got rid of some of the traditions and replaced them.

famous play writer.
William Tyndale
English scholar who became leading figure in Protestant reform before he was executed. Known for translation of Bible into English.

A way of thinking and learning that stresses the importance of human abilities and actions.
Renaissance
means rebirth and refers to the period that followed Europe’s Middle Ages.

Thirty Year’s War
1618-1648. Ended with Treaty of Westphalia. Fought by various nations for various reasons, including religious, territorial and commercial rivalries. Federalism started. Congregations gained power.

The purpose of Spanish inquisition was to slaughter the Protestantism, Muslims, and Jews.

Catholic Churches efforts to stop the Protestantism and to reform from within was known as catholic reformation.
Edict of Nantes
Law passed by Henry IV of France giving French Protestants (Huguenots) permission to worship in most public areas but not Paris. Granted them full civil rights.
selling of indulgences
practice that guaranteed a shorter stay in purgatory, and could send a soul in purgatory immediately to heaven.
Catholics believed in purgatory. A state in which some souls remain until they are purified and fit to enjoy heaven.
Martin Luther challenged this belief and stated that only God could forgive sins.
